There's Magic in the Music

January 28, 2012

Sleeve of The Jimmy Castor Bunch's 1974 LP, Supersound

Just a quick one today.

Sometimes I need to get a sense of perspective. Actually, I always need to get a sense of perspective, but sometimes I need to be reminded of that fact. Today was one of those days, and I got my kick up the backside from the late, great JC.

I'd not listened to Supersound in at least 18 months before hearing the sad news of the Everything Man's death last week (see blog/interview here), but it was precisely the right record for me to spend most of this afternoon listening to. Here's a guy who never had anything easy, who was beset by frustrations and difficulties at almost every turn - but you'd never know that just by listening to the music he made, which is always effervescent, frequently hilarious, and shot through with a rich seam of pure, simple, unaffected joy. Supersound isn't likely to make any of those Greatest Album of All Time lists, but today, there wasn't anything else I wanted to hear. The man may have gone but his music is immortal. Thank you, Mr Castor.
